Neil Lyners and Associates provided comprehensive civil and structural engineering services for the L’Ormarins Hydro Power Plant, situated on Cape Nature land in the Hottentots Holland Mountains above the Anthonij Rupert Wyne Estate. Major scope items included the design and installation of high‑pressure bulk water transmission pipelines (450 mm–630 mm diameter operating up to 3 000 kPa), flow‑meter, air‑valve, and valve chamber assemblies, plus inlet/outlet structures and an outflow channel rated for up to 700 l/s. Thrust block arrangements were engineered to resist forces exceeding 300 kN. HDPE pipework (450 mm diameter) was incorporated in the upper section to channel water from high elevation. The civil works also comprised engineered chambers, collection channels, and hydro building structures integral to the scheme’s operations.
In recognition of the project’s technical sophistication, sustainable engineering approach, and successful delivery, the team was honoured with the CESA Aon Engineering Excellence Award in 2017 for the Engineering Excellence – R 50 m to R 250 m category.
About the Award
The CESA Aon Engineering Excellence Awards, hosted by Consulting Engineers South Africa (CESA), celebrate exceptional engineering projects across disciplines, assessing innovation, quality, sustainability, and impact. In 2017, Neil Lyners and Associates received the top honour in its category, placing L’Ormarins Hydro Power Plant among the highest‑profile infrastructure achievements in South Africa for that year.
