Project

Water Pipe Replacement with Trenchless Technology, Overstrand

PROJECT SUMMARY/OVERVIEW

Between January 2011 and June 2013, LYNERS was appointed by the Overstrand Municipality (Western Cape) to execute a trenchless replacement of aging underground water infrastructure. Leveraging Trenchless Technology (TT), the project enabled the rehabilitation of pipelines without continuous open-trench excavation, minimising disruption, preserving public spaces, and promoting environmental sustainability.

LYNERS managed every engineering phase, starting with condition assessments, cost feasibility studies, and preliminary design, through to detailed design, tender documentation, adjudication, contractor appointment, and construction supervision. Technical components included installing targeted pipe replacements using trenchless methods and specialist tunneling equipment, materials, and mapping techniques, all while ensuring compliance with local infrastructure and environmental standards.

In recognition of its excellent execution and advancement of trenchless techniques in a non-metro context, the project received the Joop van Wamelen Award of Excellence at the SASTT Awards in 2013—a ceremony held during the society’s annual general meeting on 18 February 2014
